Jonathan sat with him, answered questions, provided a comforting shoulder, and had the MD speak with the family.
Jonathan is a relatively newer nurse to our department, but he is a nurse who is relied on for his expertise, patience, and positive attitude. Jonathan came from the hematology/oncology floor, where he was a valued employee, and brought the level of caring, understanding and compassion with him. Over the past year, Jonathan has been instrumental in helping the GI department in learning new equipment and procedures. Jonathan was given the task of learning the procedure and bringing it back to show us. Jonathan not only learned the procedure, but he created power points, policies, unit standards, supplies lists, found EBP articles and set up a specialty cart. Jonathan brought all of this knowledge and information to his teammates. Jonathan was instrumental in the department rolling out the new procedures and was recognized by the physician team for his skills and knowledge. He was requested to be at all of these procedures and to train every 1:1 by one physician. While learning all of this and helping to educate his teammates, Jonathan was also orienting a new RN, orienting to charge nurse, and going back to school for his FNP! Jonathan remained calm, understanding, and flexible.

Most recently, our department experienced an unexpected patient death within our department. Jonathan handle the paperwork, the calls to the donor hotline, the appropriate care connect charting and covered the department while the staff involved could debrief and decompress. While covering the department, the deceased patient's family came to the department. Jonathan sat with him, answered questions, provided a comforting shoulder, and had the MD speak with the family. While doing this, Jonathan never asked for help or notified anyone what was happening. He did this so that the involved staff could talk about their feelings and lean on one another.

Jonathan has always gone above and beyond for his peers, for his patients, and for the hospital system. He is a calm presence in a storm. His compassion and knowledge are an amazing asset. He is the definition of a nurse.
