Jonell was the first person to volunteer to help be my PPE buddy before knowing what it all entailed.
Jonell Hanson was previously a clinical coordinator in Sophia House, and she lived by the household and person-centered care model. She did everything on her unit for her residents including staying by their bedsides after hours when they had rough days, taking time to have a cup of coffee with them, taking the time to call family members to update them on how their loved ones day was, planting a garden for the residents to have fresh vegetables, and so much more. She spent time outside of work hand-making pillowcases for each resident to give to them on their birthdays as well as coming up with the next invention that could sew or quilt to help a resident maintain their dignity.

In early 2020 she got the opportunity to shift positions to a much-needed MDS coordinator position in our facility, then COVID hit. You want to see someone worthy of the DAISY Award, follow her around for a day. She wore many hats during this time and all of them were greatly needed including increasing our financial income from capturing areas on the MDS by over $40,000.00 a month in one year, yes you read that right! She saw the decline in residents’ spirits and what COVID robbed many of and took it upon herself to perform restorative exercises and take residents for walks on both long-term care wings each day; she formed a bond with many of the difficult residents we had and cared for them and showered them with love and laughter. She also helped with the extensive tasks of swabbing our residents and staff based on the MDH guidelines which at times was two times a week!

Jonell was the first person to volunteer to help be my PPE buddy before knowing what it all entailed. She can be seen on any given day passing an MDS certification course, holding hands with a struggling resident, taking a resident for a walk, completing assessments, swabbing staff or residents as well as delivering love and laughter to all that greets her. Oh, and did I mention that she has taken on the role of creating a dignity quilt for long-term care in her spare time? She has purchased fabric and is hand sewing a dignity quilt for our facility that will be used in the hardest times our facility goes through, again a dedication of showing residents to the very end her love for them.
