Several simulations were done and by the end of them, Jordan was controlling and handing off the medications from the code cart.
I've been a nurse for going on 31 years, all of it at Billings Clinic. For the last six years, I've worked as an Educator and have a strong belief in the continued need for education in this ever-changing profession. I've been privileged to work with some amazing nurses over the years and believe that the best nurses are those that seek learning opportunities and take initiative to increase their knowledge and skill. They grow individually as a nurse and eventually pass on their knowledge and skill to new nurses coming into the profession. You should learn something new every day!

I recently had the opportunity to help with IMR code simulations and was able to meet Jordan. Jordan is a young, new nurse working on ONU. She told me she is 9 months out of school and was training to be a charge nurse. She was worried about taking on that role so fresh out of school and wanted to learn about what to do in a CPR situation. She was there to learn from the simulations. Several simulations were done and by the end of them, Jordan was controlling and handing off the medications from the code cart. She did not have to actively participate, she took initiative and owned it like a boss! With all that has happened in the world of nursing in the past couple of years, it did my heart good to see a new graduate knowing what she didn't know and seeking the opportunity to learn with the help of her manager.

In my mind, there were many benefits to what she was doing, whether she recognized them all or not. She was seeking education from and networking with physicians and educators. Not only is this helping her individually as a nurse, but it is benefiting other nurses on her unit; increasing patient and unit safety and bringing more confidence to the care that she is providing. That's a win/win for everyone! Regardless of how she ended up in the simulation room, she embraced the opportunity and attained the most she could from the experience. I'm encouraged that our next generation of nurses is adapting, and Jordan is an amazing nurse who will grow to be in an elite group. I don't know Jordan personally, but I'm proud of how she jumped into simulations that are intimidating even to seasoned providers. Jordan is a great representation of what the nursing profession stands for!
