Jordyn cried as she stood with one hand on my sister’s shoulder and the other hand rubbing Mom’s leg.
I have been an employee of St. Luke’s Hospital for over 25 years. I’ve always been proud to work here, but experiencing the care of a loved one in the hospital reinforced my gratitude for this hospital and especially for Jordyn Frantz.
My mom was transported to the ED by my sister and was diagnosed with COVID-19. She was cared for on the floor for just over a week. During that time, we Face Timed daily, during which time she told me of the great care given to her. She was discharged home, but within a few days, the COVID pneumonia had taken hold. The senior living center called an ambulance and Mom was transported to another hospital. She was put in an ED room for several hours during which time she called me from her mobile phone several times because no one was checking on her or keeping her informed. I took action to have her transferred to St. Luke’s again. Once she was settled into her room we spoke and she said it felt like coming home. This was immensely comforting to us.
With Mom’s multiple co-morbidities, her health declined daily over the next week until she was transferred to the ICU. The ICU physician called to let us know that she was likely not going to make it, and allowed us to come to sit outside her ICU room in PPE so that we could be with her at the end of her life. Because my sister was COVID-recovered, she was allowed to be in the room and she put the phone near Mom so that we could say goodbye. On 12/29, Mom requested to have the mask removed so that she could be with Dad, who had died in December 2019.
This is where Jordyn’s compassion was a blessing from God. Jordyn made sure that Mom had the medications to calm her and keep her as comfortable as possible during her transition. Jordyn cried as she stood with one hand on my sister’s shoulder and the other hand rubbing Mom’s leg. She stayed there for what seemed like an hour, weeping with us.
Our gratitude to Jordyn and St. Luke’s is immense, as we have heard stories of people dying alone because no one was allowed to be with them. St. Luke’s and Jordyn not only served Mom’s healthcare needs but more importantly, ministered to her spiritual needs by showing the love of Christ in her last hours.
