At 1800 there was a code on 11 lP. I arrived to the code and there was a family member completely distraught as she had witnessed her father go unresponsive. She was only Spanish-speaking and there was no translator available on the unit. This woman was scared, shaking, and in disbelief. The language barrier made it nearly impossible for any comfort or information. I knew Jose was working because I saw him when I previously rounded on his unit. I have known Jose for years and know he’s extremely kind and caring. I called the Charge and asked if he was a certified translator and If he could have a moment to help translate on 11 LP. Within a few minutes, Jose arrived to the unit with his signature smile on his face. He was able to provide assurance to the family member by listening to her concern and translating the updates coming from the room. The woman who just lost her mother, and grandmother and had only been in the country for a few years. Her father was one of the few family members she had left. With Jose's natural and genuine caring and calming presence the family member was able to reach a point where she could sit and patiently wait for further updates from the doctor. I told Jose several times that he could return to the unit and I knew it was already a busy day and it was almost evening shift change. Without hesitation, he declined and he said he was OK to say and comfort the family member. I know he didn’t have time, I only expected him to help with a few minutes and give a quick rundown to the family member what happened. I know he probably had 100 things to do but he chose to stay and help someone in need. I can’t express my gratitude enough to Jose for his selfless act. I am proud to have Jose as a colleague and look forward to continuing o work with him
