Josefina Flores-Lara, RN, exemplifies the very essence of the DAISY Award through her clinical excellence, unwavering advocacy, and remarkable ability to extend compassionate care beyond traditional nursing.
In October 2025, during a forensic center meeting, Josefina-known to many as Josie-volunteered her expertise to assist with a complex and sensitive case referred to the Elder Abuse Forensic Center. What followed was far beyond routine nursing responsibilities. Josie personally visited the victim's home to administer a Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), ensuring the patient was evaluated in a familiar and supportive environment. She then undertook the extraordinary task of reviewing more than a thousand pages of medical records, demonstrating both her dedication and her commitment to uncovering the truth in service of justice and patient advocacy. Her work did not stop there. Josie synthesized this information into clear, thorough, and highly professional reports shared with legal counsel. Ultimately, she was called to testify as an expert medical witness in a criminal jury trial. In that high-pressure setting, Josie represented the nursing profession with distinction. Her testimony was poised, polished, and deeply impactful.
