May 2026 Honoree
Josefina Merana, BSN, RN, CCRN
Josefina Merana is the very epitome of Florence Nightingale. For 34 years, she has dedicated her career to Kaiser Permanente, and every single day has been marked by compassion, excellence, and selfless service to her patients, their families, and her coworkers.
She spent many years as an ICU Registered Nurse, providing exceptional care during the most critical moments, before transitioning halfway through her career into Perioperative Services. Regardless of where she served, Josefina’s commitment to patient-centered care never wavered.
With her strong ICU background and advanced clinical skills, Josefina has saved many lives. One notable example includes recognizing the early signs and symptoms of a stroke in a patient during the recovery phase. Her immediate assessment, prompt reporting, and swift initiation of appropriate interventions allowed for rapid treatment, ultimately improving the patient’s outcome. Her clinical vigilance and decisive action exemplify nursing excellence and patient advocacy at its highest level.
Josefina is also our Pediatric Nurse Champion. She has a remarkable gift and a true “magic touch” with anxious pediatric patients, immediately putting them at ease. She offers the same calm reassurance to parents in both the Pre-Operative and Recovery areas, easing fears and building trust. Her focus on patient safety, gentle approach, and attention to detail create a smooth and comforting experience for families, while her professionalism and preparedness consistently support and impress our Anesthesia team.
A true mentor and role model, Josefina warmly welcomes new nurses with open arms, guiding them with patience, encouragement, and generosity. She consistently steps up whenever her unit needs support as a relief charge nurse and never hesitates to help beyond her assigned role.
During the pandemic, she selflessly volunteered at the vaccine clinic, and she has continually offered her expertise to Interventional Radiology, the Surgery Center, and the Gastroenterology Department whenever additional help was needed.
Josefina is the definition of selflessness. She truly loves what she does, and she practices nursing with genuine kindness, humility, and heart. Her compassion is felt not only by her patients, but also by every colleague who has had the privilege of working alongside her.
She deserves every award in the world, but most of all, she deserves time with her beloved family, enjoying what she loves—traveling and exploring the world.
With the utmost admiration and gratitude, I proudly nominate Josefina Merana for the DAISY Award in recognition of her 34 years of unwavering dedication to the nursing profession. Throughout her remarkable career, she has touched thousands of lives through her caring spirit, clinical excellence, and deep passion for nursing.
Her legacy is measured not only in years of service, but in the countless hearts she has uplifted and lives she has forever changed.
