Joseline Navarro was caring for a patient who was experiencing anxiety due to his current health status and hospitalization. This patient was not sleeping, almost near a panic attack, when Josie asked permission to lay her hands on him and do meditative rhythmic breathing together. She sat in the chair next to him, walking him through this technique for 30 minutes despite knowing she needed to chart and complete additional tasks. During this period of time, the patient relaxed, fell asleep, and slept the remainder of the night. Josie exemplified the true meaning of nursing compassion and dedication to her patients by taking this time during her busy shift to identify and prioritize the necessary reassurance and teach a new relaxation technique. Too often, the solution is to call the MD for sleep aid, but Josie focused on this patient to provide reassurance and to teach him a coping technique that he can continue to utilize.
