Joseph’s explanation of the situation, his empathy, and his sincerity calmed the wife and family.
Mr. Joseph hasn't been with the ICU for long, but the way he treats his patients and their families is amazing. Not all nurses have the patience to talk smoothly and be able to comfort families, especially in a life and death situation. Joseph has proven that as healthcare providers we must treat our patients’ families with respect and involved them in our patients' care. He easily establishes good care with them and I admire him for that. We had a COVID patient who was very sick and eventually passed, during that time, visitors were not allowed unless patients were actively dying. When the patient died, the wife was making a scene, wanting to touch the patient. We highly discouraged that to protect the family, but the wife was screaming and insisting to go in. Charge Nurse and OA tried to comfort her, but that didn't work. Joseph’s explanation of the situation, his empathy, and his sincerity calmed the wife and family. He spent his time listening to them and he was able to settle the issue with his utmost sincerity. He had shown them that we care not only for patients but for their families as well, as they are an integral part of providing effective care to our patients.
