I have the honor to nominate Joseph Galvan, BSN, RN, ONC, as a DAISY Honoree. I’ve been working with him since I started in MHMC for the last 12 years. Joseph is our routine charge nurse. I commend him for asserting himself as a true definition of a great leader and a dynamic nurse. As a charge nurse and a true leader, Joseph oversees our unit as a well-engaged and helpful leader. He ensures everyone in our unit, including staff and patients, is well attended. He is the type of leader who comes to the rescue when you really need help. He answers and attends to patients' calls when he knows the bedside nurse can’t do it. You don’t even have to ask him; he knows when to step in.

I admire his patience and great composure, too. He handles both staff and patients' frustrations and grievances professionally. He is always open to feedback, whether it is positive or negative. As a dynamic nurse, Joseph leaves a great impact on his colleagues and patients. A great story to share was about a patient who has always called every holiday season since I started in our unit. This patient always thanks him for all the things he has done and received when he was under Joseph’s nursing care. I received calls from this same patient when Joseph was not working during the Holiday season several times every year. I was just amazed that through the years, this patient never forgot to appreciate him. Joseph left a big impact on this patient’s life, and he never forgot it. This is so amazing!

Another good example I have is when I update the board and explain to my patients that Joseph is our charge nurse for that day, patients know him and commend him as great Charge nurse. He leaves a great impression on our patients, for he always makes himself available, whether that is to attend to a patient’s call from the desk or to help out at the bedside. As his colleague, Joseph’s calm and positive attitude helps a lot. When we have very busy shifts, Joseph always motivates us and helps around. It is such a blessing to have a nurse leader who is always willing to lend a hand. It lightens and brightens our day when you work with him. Joseph just doesn’t teach, talk, inspire, or show how to do it. He goes with us to do it. It’s a team effort! Joseph is an experienced, very knowledgeable, and highly skilled nurse- a great resource person to us. Indeed, these are the reasons why Joseph deserves to receive a DAISY Award. It is long overdue, and he needs to be recognized. Joseph is such an amazing leader and a dynamic nurse! A nurse who works for what he loves doing, not because he ought to do it.
