There was a night when Joe took care of a patient who was going to transition to comfort and get terminally extubated. During his shift, I saw him do the most heartwarming acts of compassion. He teamed up with the respiratory therapist and took the patient to the floor’s atrium, where the patient was able to see the sunrise for one last time. The patient’s son was with her and got to enjoy some of the last memories he would have with her. Joe took time out of his busy shift and went out of his way to do this act of kindness, and I still think about it to this day. He deserves the utmost recognition for displaying this degree of empathy.
