For over two hours, this patient's behavior escalated as one nurse attempted to manage the situation, unintentionally exacerbating the tension. The patient's actions were inappropriate and created a chaotic environment for everyone nearby. When Joe stepped in, everything changed. Despite the patient's inappropriate and disrespectful behavior, Joe approached the situation with humility, kindness, and an unshakable sense of calm. He treated the patient with dignity and addressed their basic needs by providing fresh linens, water, a warm blanket, and personally escorting the patient to the bathroom. For the remainder of their time in the emergency department, the patient was cooperative and compliant. Joe's ability to de-escalate the situation not only improved the patient's experience but also brought relief to the staff and other patients who were impacted by the earlier disruption.
