Recently Josh cared for a patient who was to be discharged. Josh had an uneasy feeling about a potential domestic situation, although nothing had been verbalized during this patient's prior screening. He continued to care for her throughout the day, but the concerns lingered.
As Josh was discharging the patient, and on her way out the door, he asked her if she felt safe to go home. The patient stated she was fearful. At this point, Josh intervened and brought the patient back to the unit. Upon arrival to the unit, information was provided to the patient and the appropriate people became involved to make sure she left with a plan.
Our Clinical Manager called this patient a couple days later to make sure everything was going okay. This lady shared that she felt blessed to have had Josh as a nurse. Josh had taken the time to pay attention and to reach out to her and then to intervene.
On this day Josh made an absolute life-long impact on this lady's life. He showed care and compassion, even on a busy day, to inquire about a feeling he had. He didn't have to do this as she had already been screened and did not show to be at risk for abuse, but he did this because he cared for what he believed may be a problem.
