Josh was taking care of a pediatric patient who had been in the emergency room for over 24 hours. The patient had run away from home and was undergoing a psych evaluation. During his shift, Josh was quickly able to establish a good rapport with the patient. The patient had complications of discharge involving CPS in a safe home environment. Josh was an unbelievable advocate for this patient. Although CPS originally cleared the patient to go home, Josh recognized the stress that the patient was experiencing due to the plan of going home with the family. He continued to escalate, with the help of social work, and pushed for a safe disposition that the patient was agreeable to and felt safe with. Due to Josh’s hard work and advocacy, the patient was able to be transferred to a pediatric facility that specialized in helping to place children in the situation. Upon learning that he, the patient, would not be forced to return to his previous situation, Josh was able to calm the patient down in an escalating situation. Under these circumstances, I cannot help but feel that Josh showed this child more care and compassion than he had likely ever felt before in his life.
