My daughter was only two weeks old when we had to bring her to UCSF pediatric emergency department where she would be later admitted to the Intensive Care Nursery for two days. Events leading up to this admission were emotionally draining as her mother and I weren’t able to sleep for 36 hours due to multiple appointments leading up to her admission. This is where Josie, the day nurse, raised our spirits. She would go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure not only our daughter was taken care of, but us, as her parents were cared for. She would go out of her way to bring us, food, drinks, and supplies, and would come see us no matter what we needed and proactively bring us things we didn’t even realize we needed since we were so tired. She would take time out of her own break just to help us, even when she had a full patient load. Not only did she advocate for us, she advocated for our daughter during physician rounding, relaying questions and concerns we had. Even getting the information we ourselves may have forgotten to ask about due to the extreme emotional and physical fatigue. We truly felt cared for by our Nurse Josie and felt we could focus on our daughter and not have to worry about the small things. As a first-time parent, this truly meant the world to us, as our daughter is our world. She not only took care of our daughter but took care of us and our whole family. I am so touched by her nursing ethic and expertise, it made me feel calm and safe whenever she was near by. She was able to assess our daughter and proactively contacted the doctor to change or add orders, which sped up our discharge and allowed us to bring our baby home sooner rather than later. Of all the nurses we have worked with, she stands out above and far beyond the standard of care provided.
