She brought special snacks, played games with our son, and even gave us breaks when we needed them.
A warm, friendly smile and a calm demeanor—these are just two of the well-known traits of Josie Thomas, a Flow Coordinator in the Emergency Department of Piedmont Mountainside. These traits would bring immeasurable comfort to the parents of a pediatric behavioral health patient on a fall day in November of 2025.

The parents of the child shared, “Unfortunately, we came in for a 1013 for our 13-year-old son. He has out-of-state insurance, so it took over 3 days to place him where he needed to be. Josie was friendly, prompt, and a source of comfort for us. She brought special snacks, played games with our son, and even gave us breaks when we needed them. We have met people here that we hope to never see again, but she will forever be a bright spot to us. She truly has the heart for this, and we are forever grateful to her.”

Josie’s excellence in clinical care and compassion has led to her nomination for the DAISY Award. Today, as with many others, Josie went above and beyond in the care she provides to our patients and their families. We are profoundly grateful to recognize and celebrate Josie as our most recent DAISY Award winner!
