Her comforting words and explanation of my care plan really helped me cope with my diagnosis and put me more at ease.
I was admitted to the hospital on October 25, 2022 for atrial fibrillation. Hearing news that there is something wrong with my heart was very upsetting, devastating, and emotional. I will start by saying that all of the nursing staff involved in my care were very professional, comforting, and compassionate. One nurse stood out above the rest. Her name was Joy.
Joy was the one who transported me from the emergency room to my room upstairs. In the short trip from the ER to room 2112 where I would be staying, Joy explained the process for my care to get me ready for discharge. Her comforting words and explanation of my care plan really helped me cope with my diagnosis and put me more at ease. The level of care Joy provided was really first class. She made sure I had something to eat, explained the purpose of the meds, and explained the TEE and cardioversion procedure that I would undergo.
Joy really lived up to her name. She kept a positive attitude and I could really tell that she genuinely cared for her patients. Little things like smiling when coming into the room, engaging in conversation, and just being pleasant overall really made my stay more enjoyable. Outside of the IV's, heart monitor and the vital checks; Joy really did not make me feel like it was a hospital stay. She made me laugh and put a smile on my face. I really feel that is important for patient recovery. I could go on and on about her and how she made my short stay feel more at ease and comfortable, but I am sure that Northwestern knows that she is a real asset to the nursing team.
NOTE: This patient came to the hospital when we presented Joy with her DAISY Award and read his own nomination.
