May 2026 Honoree
Joy Omokaro, DNP, RN
My friend was in the hospital after being hit by two cars. It was one of the most traumatic and terrifying experiences of his life. He was in shock, overwhelmed, and emotionally shaken.
While he received medical treatment from many staff members, Joy Omokaro was the one who truly cared for him as a person, not just as a patient. From the moment she entered the room, her presence brought a sense of calm that he desperately needed. She spoke gently, answered every question with patience, and reassured him when fear and anxiety began to take over. She never rushed him and never dismissed his concerns. She made him feel safe during a time when everything felt uncertain and frightening.
What stood out the most was that Joy prayed with him. After surviving being hit by two cars, he felt vulnerable in a way that is difficult to describe. She recognized that he needed more than physical care. He needed emotional and spiritual support. She brought a sense of peace and comfort that made an incredible difference in that moment. He later shared that he did not feel alone. He felt seen, heard, and deeply cared for.
Joy embodies what nursing should be: compassionate, skilled, and wholeheartedly present. During one of the worst moments of his life, her kindness became a light. The impact she made will not be forgotten. She truly represents the heart and spirit of the DAISY Award
