Her heart for humanity is mind-blowing. I have personally witnessed her help others in their time of need. You can find Joyce buying groceries for others, putting gas in their car, or giving them financial assistance.
To be an operating room nurse, one must know how to be a good listener, a good teacher, a glorified mechanic, a critical thinker, be quick on your feet, be flexible, and always, always be two steps ahead of your surgeon. This nurse knows this. This nurse stands out for several reasons. Her heart for humanity is mind-blowing. I have personally witnessed her help others in their time of need. You can find this lady buying groceries for others, putting gas in their car, or giving them financial assistance. You will even find this lady doing this for her patients' families. She is unstoppable. I am constantly blown away by her heart to serve. I have had the privilege to know her and work alongside her for 18 years. Several years back, I had mentioned in a general conversation that I needed a bottle of water and how I need to be better about keeping water with me. The very next day, here she comes with a case of water and puts it in my office.

She has patients who come on a routine basis for treatment, and they look for her. Their families look for her. I must say that two things stand out most to me and that is her stamina and her commitment to her patients. She has been a nurse for 46 years and her heart and her loyalty have never wavered. To this day, she may do 10 surgeries in 1 room and may not get a break until lunchtime. And you can be sure that her very last patient after a long day will still get her 110%. Her commitment to her patients is absolutely profound. I know that her patients’ experiences, while they are here, are better because of her.

This nurse gets it. She understands the astronomical responsibility that she has when she leaves pre-op. She understands that she has separated her patient from their loved ones and she will be their advocate until she brings them back to their families. This nurse plans to retire at the end of the year. This place will experience a great loss when she leaves. If there has ever been a time to give a deserving nurse an award, this is the time and that. Joyce Bowden is a true DAISY Nurse.
