Joyce has led with humility, empathy, and passion, while always remaining professional.
As the Chief Nursing Officer at University of Maryland, Upper Chesapeake Health for over 13 years, Joyce has been a stellar example of a true nurse professional. Joyce's spirit of caring and compassion has helped move the division forward toward nursing excellence.
Under her leadership, we have had a thriving Nursing Shared Governance Council; we adopted a Patient and Family Centered Care model; we have expanded our professional advancement model and more than tripled the number of certified, credentialed nurses; we have developed a robust nurse graduate residency program, which is now a part of the Vizient Collaborative with the state of Maryland; we have had multiple, successful recruitment campaigns—most noteworthy—the 100 nurses in 100 days campaign. Under her leadership, we were the first hospital in UMMS to receive the Baby Friendly Designation, a World Health Organization initiative; the first in UMMS to receive first the silver, then the gold Beacon Award for Nursing Excellence from the American Association for Critical Care Nurses for our ICU Upper Chesapeake Medical Center; AND the first in UMMS to receive the Pathway to Excellence designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
And, though all of these accolades are wonderful, of most significance is the nursing excellence behind the awards—the care, the compassion, the drive of so many nurses and nurse leaders whom she has guided along the way.
Joyce has led with humility, empathy, and passion, while always remaining professional. Those who have worked closely with her over the years, know she has a great sense of humor, she has a sharp business acumen (I will personally miss her drawings on legal paper), and can seemingly rise to any occasion.
Though I could go on about her entire 44-year career in nursing, we would like her years as our CNO to be recognized. For her years of dedication and service as a nurse leader, we feel that The DAISY Nurse Leader Award is the most appropriate way of acknowledging her legacy at University of Maryland, Upper Chesapeake Health.
