In an effort to improve same-day access to the VAMC Salem, the Quick Care Clinic or QCC opened in late December of 2016. Although patients frequently see a different provider, Joyce Johnston, RN has been the face of Quick Care, tirelessly triaging and caring for 20-40 Veterans per day. The level of commitment which Joyce has demonstrated with her persistence and determination should not be left unnoticed. On a busy day, she single-handedly triaged over 40 patients before 2:30 pm, in addition to administering breathing treatment, shots of solumedrol and Toradol, providing discharge instructions and other types of clinical support. Joyce has excellent clinical judgment and a great deal of integrity. She also has a "no-nonsense," serious, and efficient approach to her work. She has common sense and a good sense of humor, which are essential to this setting. She treats each and every Veteran with respect as if he or she was a family member. The VAMC Salem is very fortunate to have such an extraordinary nurse on staff. As the staff physician in the QCC, I am very thankful to have Joyce Johnston on my team.
