I was in the hospital due to an emergency situation. I have difficulty being in a room with others, so I requested a private room. At that point, I was told that the nurse manager was trying to take care of this, but I had not met her. Within a few hours, I was told that I would be moved to a private room. I was so pleased, I asked to see the person who had arranged this for me. I was introduced to her. Joyce gave me her card and said if I needed anything, I should contact her. I thanked Joyce for all of her help. I am not one to lie in a hospital bed. I like to get up and walk. While I 'lapped' the halls, I noticed that her door was always open, but she was rarely there. The reason was that she was constantly with her nurses, helping them with issues, and taking care of patient problems. I observed that Joyce was exceedingly caring, and would go in to check on all of the patients on the floor who were under her watch. I was most impressed.
After six days, I was sent home. While home, I needed to have certain supplies for showering, etc. We began to run out of these, and I once again turned to Joyce. I called her, and she immediately put together a package of supplies for me and had it brought down to the Emergency Room entrance, so my wife could pick it up. I was most appreciative. I was scheduled for surgery. I contacted Joyce once again a week and a half before the surgery date, asking, once again, if she would be able to get me a private room. Joyce told me that I was "on her calendar" and that she would do all that she could. Sure enough, after the surgery, I was brought to a private room which was a great relief to me. I was going to be sent home; she came in to check on me. I don't know if Joyce realized how much her concern meant to me.
Through all of the anxiety about the surgery, the illness, etc., Joyce's focus on my welfare was a tremendous comfort to me. Seeing Joyce working with the other nurses confirmed her dedication and commitment to a job which many times, I'm sure, is somewhat thankless. Joyce is a dedicated nurse, a wonderful manager, but most importantly, a genuinely loving and concerned human being. In the world such as it is, those like her offer a beacon of hope, particularly to those who are in need of assistance.
