Joyce rallied the troops. She coordinated with the doctor and social worker in order to get his insurance to approve a temporary insulin prescription to help him until he met with his endocrinologist a few days after he was discharged.
Joyce was taking care of a young 24-year-old patient diagnosed with DKA. He was getting ready to get discharged home when social problems pertaining to his prescriptions started to arise. His pharmacy was refusing to fill his much-needed insulin due to the fact they had recently been filled, and his insurance would not pay. However, Joyce rallied the troops. She coordinated with the doctor and social worker in order to get his insurance to approve a temporary insulin prescription to help him until he met with his endocrinologist a few days after he was discharged. Fast forward a few hours, Joyce was notified that one of his prescriptions had not been called in and the pharmacy was going to close in an hour. With the clock ticking, Joyce dutifully reached out to the covering provider (of course, this had to happen after everyone went home) to get the correct prescription sent in. Met countless roadblocks and, with little guidance or help from our on-call social worker, called the patient's pharmacy to inquire if we could call in the prescription. With further discussion between herself and the on-call doctor, Joyce called in the patient's prescription and verified that it was received and could be ready tonight. With a potential fiasco adverted, Joyce was able to send a very grateful patient home with a hug and a smile.
