Well, as it turned out, she accomplished those tasks, worked a 12 hour shift, and managed to get me a private room. She went beyond what I would consider normal nursing care.
Recently I had a stay at Lancaster General Hospital from Thursday until Monday due to the fact that my scheduled surgical procedure was delayed because they could not get it fit in on Friday. Your entire nursing staff is excellent but one in particular stood out.

Joyce covered my room starting on Friday. I was an “easy” patient until I was not hearing from the EV docs of my procedure time. I actually thought it was going to be done on Thursday afternoon. As it turned out, Joyce had to break the news that my pacemaker will not be implemented until Monday. I was naturally upset and threatened to leave against the physician's wishes. That’s when Joyce went to work. She explained in a very professional manner why they wanted me to stay. She made calls to see if the procedure could be early Monday so I could be home Monday night. She had to deal with Patient Services (my wife called about my situation). She worked out a private room since I had a lot of work to do knowing I wasn’t going to be home until at least Monday.

Meanwhile, I watched her work from my doorway. She was directing other nurses, educating them on proper procedures on the computers, handling her own room responsibilities, on top of trying to keep me happy. Well, as it turned out, she accomplished those tasks, worked a 12 hour shift, and managed to get me a private room. She went beyond what I would consider normal nursing care. She thought about putting a sheet on the vinyl lounge chair to keep me from sweating. She called the cardiologist to see if she could disconnect the heart monitor so I could take a shower, then set the shower up for me to make it as easy as possible. She always made sure a set of eyes were on me if I walked the hallway, or watched the door to the bathroom if I had to go there. She explained everything she was doing and why. She even made sure I had a hot cup of coffee with a touch of cinnamon as an extra touch on Saturday and Sunday mornings way before breakfast arrived. She was just the best, and yes, I was home on Monday night.

I’m sure Pat Barnes would have appreciated her effort also. Joyce was the total package – Dedicated to her profession, Compassionate, Caring, and Helpful to her patients and colleagues, and I really believe she enjoys her life’s mission.

I hope everyone gets to enjoy the Cinnamon on Joyce’s behalf. She earned it.
