Joye Calvin-Martin is an exceptional nursing leader who demonstrates compassion, resilience, and advocacy in one of the most challenging areas of healthcare: mental health.

As an Assistant Nurse Manager on the inpatient mental health unit, Joye consistently goes above and beyond to ensure patients receive dignified, holistic care while supporting her team through complex and emotionally demanding situations.

Joye creates a therapeutic environment where patients feel safe, respected, and heard. She understands that mental health care requires patience, empathy, and strong communication, and she models these qualities daily. Whether de-escalating a crisis with calm professionalism or guiding staff through trauma-informed care practices, Joye’s leadership ensures that every patient encounter reflects compassion and hope.

Her dedication to staff well-being is equally remarkable. Joye prioritizes education and emotional support for her team, recognizing the unique stressors of inpatient mental health nursing. She mentors new nurses, promotes self-care, and fosters a culture of collaboration and resilience. Her ability to balance patient advocacy with staff empowerment makes her an invaluable leader.

One example of her impact occurred when a patient experiencing severe psychosis became highly agitated. Joye immediately stepped in, using therapeutic communication techniques to calm the patient while coordinating a safe intervention with the team. She maintained a reassuring presence, speaking gently and validating the patient’s feelings, which helped de-escalate the situation without the need for restraints.

Afterward, Joye spent time with the patient, ensuring they felt heard and supported, and later debriefed with the staff to reinforce best practices and provide emotional support. Her actions preserved the patient’s dignity, prevented harm, and strengthened team confidence in crisis management.

Joye’s compassion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to mental health care make her a true role model and a deserving recipient of the DAISY Award.

Thank you, Joye, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
