Compassion:* Provides service in a spirit of empathy, love and concern.
Joysy is always involved with all of the patient's care. Even when she is not "assigned" to a patient she takes the initiative to take care of them if needed and assist them in any way. Joysy has an impressive nursing knowledge and seeks opportunities to learn each day. She goes out of her way to attend informational meetings to increase her knowledge. If there is a new process or procedure being taught she doesn't shy from it but includes herself to make sure that her knowledge base is up-to-date and accurate. Her bedside manner is impeccable and she truly knows how to make the patient feel comfortable and at ease. Joysy has taken care of many patients that have things going on in their home life. Joysy stays focused on the patient rather than the tasks at hand. She even had a patient that was newly diagnosed HIV and was worried about her family finding out. Joysy ensured her that the diagnosis would remain confidential and offered for the patient to open up to her if she wanted. The patient ended up confiding in Joysy and stated that "you are the only nurse that inquired to what was really going on with me". This patient also asked for Joysy to be her nurse again the next night. Overall, Joysy pleases our patients, treats them as a special person rather than a task on her to do list, and they are delighted to have her a second time.
Integrity:*Is honest, trust worthy, authentic, humble, transparent and devoted.
Joysy provides each patient with compassionate care no matter the circumstance or culture. She incorporates the families of the patients into their care and truly seems concerned for the wellbeing of the patient and the family members. She is an inspiration to others and an amazing leader. When there is a question about an issue she is a go to person for the answer.
Respect:*Treats everyone fairly in recognition of their intrinsic worth.
She is thorough and precise with her care. She follows the policies and procedures that are set in place for her. She is an extraordinary nurse and should be recognized as one. She is well respected on the unit. People look to her for direction in more than one way. I have heard one coworker mention that she looked to Joysy's documentation to better her own. This shows that Joysy is exceptional in many areas.
Collaboration:* Works together with our patients and partners
Joysy maintains a positive attitude that encourages a better moral in the entire unit. I have witnessed Joysy taking her time to assist another nurse with a new admission, educating that nurse on the steps that needed to be taken to care for the patient, and she even followed up on the care of that patient. One night as charge nurse Joysy answered the patient's call light to find that she could not void due to extreme pain. She talked with the primary nurse and when the plan for a catheter was set she went back to that patient's room to inform her that she would be getting a catheter. The patient requested that Joysy place the catheter. She placed the catheter and then sat with the patient to make sure she was okay. The patient expressed to her that the other employee had been rude to her. Joysy talked with the patient and expressed her sympathy to the situation. Afterwards, the patient was happy and stated that she felt comfortable with the care she received from Joysy. Stepping above and beyond for our patients is not an uncommon act for Joysy.
Leadership:* A true Servant Leader and one who leads by example:
Joysy shows excellent leadership abilities especially during busy times on the unit. EVS wanted Joysy to sign verifying that rounds were made and trash was emptied. Joysy very politely explained that she would be happy to sign EVS's document after she has made her own rounds to verify that trash was emptied. Joysy found that the trash was not emptied at all. She did not sign the document until the items were completed; therefore, holding EVS accountable for their actions.
Excellence:* Provides high standards of service and performance
We had a patient on the unit who was admitted with a preconceived notion about Parkland. The patient stated that she heard Parkland was an awful hospital. Joysy single-handedly changed the patient's mind. The patient requested to have Joysy as her nurse until she was discharged home. The patient stated that the Joysy made her stay a positive one and she will never speak another bad word about Parkland. The patient stated that Joysy anticipated her every need and eased her anxiety about being a first time mother. The patient felt safe and empowered to go home alone with her baby.
Stewardship:* Manages resources responsibly and brings value to patients and taxpayers.
Joysy not only is a great patient advocate, she also is a very engaged charge nurse on the unit. When Joysy is charge she goes above and beyond her duties and even organizes tasks for other charge nurses. She reports unit needs to the unit manager and keeps an eye on supplies to make sure that everyone is surrounded by the things necessary for them to do their job.
Other examples of how Joysy demonstrates being worthy of the DAISY award - Joysy had a patient that was young and had issues with the father of her baby along with his mother. She noticed that her patient began to experience a panic attack. Joysy quickly took action to clear the situation and calm the patient down to a point where she could breathe and relax. Joysy offered to call security to escort the father of the baby and his mother out but the patient refused this service and asked Joysy to instruct them to leave and not come back instead. Joysy did exactly what the patient requested in a calm manner. The family members did leave and the patient was at ease knowing that Joysy had helped her take care of the situation. This shows me that she cares about each patient, their culture, and their wishes regarding their care.
