We knew from the minute we met her that she was a caring and compassionate nurse, but when we found out she chose to come in when she wasn’t scheduled on her 50th birthday, it confirmed that she was everything we thought she was and more.
Our son B was born at 24 weeks. We had prepared for this due to a very complicated twin pregnancy and losing his brother at only 18 weeks. However, we could have never prepared for what the 21 days we spent in the NICU would be like. We knew the odds for B were not good and were overwhelmed by the amount of information we received on a daily basis. In stepped Judy, one of B’s primary nurses. From the beginning, we were hesitant to touch B because of how fragile he was. Judy constantly encouraged us to talk to him, touch him and help with cares. She held our hand every step of the way, and I’m so thankful for her encouragement throughout B’s stay. Roughly two weeks into our NICU stay, it was very evident that B’s lungs were very sick. He went through multiple procedures and had been poked and prodded so much that we began seeing the exhaustion in his face. Eventually, we were told B would not make it. We knew we weren’t leaving the hospital at that point and would be by his side for whatever remaining time we had with him. Judy heard about B’s condition and came in to work the night shift to be with us when she was supposed to be off. When she arrived for her shift, she brought snacks and homemade cookies for us. The next day, our sweet B passed away. That day was also Judy’s 50th birthday. We knew from the minute we met her that she was a caring and compassionate nurse, but when we found out she chose to come in when she wasn’t scheduled on her 50th birthday, it confirmed that she was everything we thought she was and more. We are forever grateful for Judy and the care she showed not only for our son but for us as well. I still don’t understand why B’s story ended the way it did, but I know that the people and nurses like Judy we met along the way were there for a reason.
