While working one night, one of Judy's patients had been having a difficult day during his care. This young boy had been abandoned by so many family members in his life, and this day he was unsure who he would be going home to. His sadness overwhelmed him. Judy went in his room to begin his evening care and this young boy leaned in to her. Without hesitation she scooped him up onto her lap and he clung to her. They sat quietly like this for an hour. After which evening care was completed without incident.

Judy is a great example of care and compassion in our pediatric population. I have seen so many examples where she cares for some of our most challenging patients and makes a connection by validating their feelings. She shows us that sometimes the most important thing you can do for your patient is just being present for them.
