Judy is an adult Oncology nurse working in the infusion center on Starr 3. Judy has been part of the NYP family for 20 + years. With the number of years Judy has invested in patient care, it is almost impossible to describe the kind of caring individual Judy is and has been to her patients and fellow coworkers. Judy has dedicated her life to caring for a unique and diverse group of individuals, many with complex and life-altering disease processes. She is an advocate for family-centered care. Whether a patient has met her for the first time or has known her for years, they never forget her name or the care they have received from her. I have had patients who have been cared for by Judy and the first thing they ask when they arrive is "Is Judy here?" I have learned that patients remember two things when in a hospital setting, the really good care they have received and the really bad care they have received. The infusion center is a large, extremely busy unit and nothing but the best things are said about the care they have received from Judy. Here are some examples of some of the things that are said about Judy after their treatment:
"Judy Murphy continues to be a joy and a true gift."
"I have kudos for Judith Murphy who led me to a comfortable chair and explained what the procedure would involve. I had additional questions and concerns which were addressed competently humanely and with patience. I can't say enough about her ability to allay my fears and concerns. She was both professional and friendly."
"The very best care was given. Nurse Judith Murphy does such a tremendous job in the care that she gives. We rate her A+."
"Judy is very thoughtful. She is informed and caring."
"There is one nurse her name is Judy, I think she works in BMT. I commend her for her professionalism and compassion that she gives me when I have her as a nurse. She is truly what NYP represents! Thank you, Judy!"
Judy not only treats her patients like family, she treats her coworkers just the same. Her coworkers always know what it feels like to be supported. During the busiest of days, Judy will answer questions and put in as many IVs as you need because she is known as one of, if not the best person at that skill. There is never a question or rejection, just a "Sure, no problem".
Although Judy is an adult nurse, she supports the pediatric nurses as well. She made an effort to care for some of the smallest, most vulnerable patients we have, even if it may have been just a little outside of her comfort zone.We had a set of twins in the pediatric hematology/oncology clinic. They are regular patients who come for blood transfusions every 6 weeks and every 6 weeks we would have the most difficult time getting Intravenous Access on them. I decided to go to Star 3 to seek Judy out for help. One baby cried from beginning to end, but Judy got her IV in 1 shot (Not surprised!) Just when I thought we had victory, I turned around and Judy was crying. She said, "I can't do that anymore, I feel horrible" I literally wanted to cry with her. She took a moment, gathered her composure and we were on to baby number 2. Having to stick infants is not an easy task for anyone, however, that task is even more challenging when you don't do it all of the time. It was a very emotional day, probably more emotional than anticipated. But I know if I ever had to ask Judy to do it again, she would without any hesitation.
Judy is a nurse that goes beyond her daily duties to make sure that everyone is having a great day, co-workers and patients alike. She is one of a kind. She works hard, has a very positive attitude, and is an all-around professional. A person like Judy is hard to find. NYP and all of the patients that are fortunate enough to cross her path are absolutely lucky to have someone like her on their team.
