Judy took it upon herself to help this patient and spent extra time on a routine basis to review competency materials on the evening shift.
On the KEATs program, we serve the neurocognitively impaired population that includes persons with IDD head injuries etc. One patient in particular was noted to have IDD and a history of head injury. This patient was very motivated towards being opined competent in competency evaluation but had trouble with learning the material despite being in 1 on 1 competency education. Judy took it upon herself to help this patient and spent extra time on a routine basis to review competency materials on the evening shift. This extra attention helped keep this patient motivated towards competency learning, and ultimately, with all the other programming, the patient was able to meet with psychology and be opined competency to stand trial and discharge from the hospital. I believe in the psychiatric forensic setting, this extra effort and attention towards individual patients not only helps the patient but serves the greater efforts of the hospital towards decreasing the length of stay and improving access to beds that are needed in the state.
