Julia Joseph, BSN
Julia Joseph floated to 6 South for the shift. One of her patients came out of his room to ask for help for his visitors. The patient stated that he thought his friends had overdosed on fentanyl. Julia rushed into the room to find 2 visitors on the couch unresponsive; she checked for pulses, and upon verifying pulses were present, she called for help.
Julia returned to the visitors seconds later and again checked for pulses; one female visitor still had a pulse, but the male visitor did not. She activated the code blue alarm for assistance. She moved the female visitor out of the way and asked for the Assistant Manager's help (who had arrived in the room) to place the male visitor on the floor. Julia immediately began CPR, and BLS interventions were provided to both visitors with the help of other staff present.
As she continued to provide high-quality chest compressions, she verbalized events to ICU and Emergency personnel who arrived in the room for assistance. Both visitors were medicated with Narcan, after which the female visitor became more alert, and the male visitor regained pulses. Both visitors were taken to the emergency room for treatment and evaluation. Both visitors left the emergency room on their own two feet later that day.
I have gotten to know Julia as a very good and reliable nurse. She always has a positive attitude, has a great personality, and communicates effectively and professionally with all the nurses, physicians, and ancillary staff. Julia regularly performs her nursing duties with superlative efficiency. In this high-stress and emergent situation, Julia maintained a focused and cool head and was able to perform nursing assessments, collaborate with other team members, and provide BLS interventions with such high efficiency that both of these visitors were able to be saved.
This situation cemented the fact that Julia is a nurse who exemplifies all the traits of a great nurse and a great human being. I would feel 100% safe in Julia’s hands if I were her patient. Thank you, Julia, for being a great example of the nursing profession.
