We are the adopted parents of baby "M" and have been with her since her C-section birth on October 1st at OSU Medical Wexner. Our experience to the adoption process began normally with a scheduled C-section for our birth mom. After birth, when M was in the special care nursery, she went into respiratory distress and was admitted quickly to the NICU.
Here is where our journey really began. We stayed with M all day, only leaving to shower and sleep. M was on CPAP for five days, and finally was weaned to a nasal cannula. M was doing great for over a week, when we received a frantic call from a doctor saying M went into pulmonary edema and they could not figure out why. When we arrived that Wednesday morning, already upset and distraught, we were introduced to Julia Taylor, our dayshift nurse.
Our anxiety was already through the roof, and on that horrible day Julia made all the difference. Julia stayed 1:1 with us and M through everything. She addressed our concerns to the physicians, bought us food because we refused to leave M's side, and made us feel like M was going to be okay.
Being a nurse manager, myself, it is so refreshing to have a nurse show so much empathy and compassion. Julia was our voice of reason when there was so much uncertainty. We eventually transferred M to Nationwide Columbus, and wish to acknowledge that Julia played an important part in M's recovery.
