Yesterday, I had one of the most refreshing experiences with Julian, a 3N nurse. Julian was taking care of CB, a very challenging patient with a history of IV drug abuse on Methadone and on IV antibiotics for recurrent severe skin infection and osteomyelitis due to his IV drug usage and always requesting more pain medications. Despite these challenges, Julian could use his critical thinking skills in nursing to realize there was a change in the patient's condition yesterday afternoon, with body aches, fatigue, and low-grade fever. He reached out to me and used the SBAR to his fullest with a recommendation to consider testing the patient for Influenza and COVID-19. After re-evaluating the patient, I fully agreed with his recommendation and ordered Flu and COVID-19 screening, and sure enough, the patient tested positive for COVID-19. Thanks to Julian’s professionalism, critical thinking, and ability to see a human being, his actions allowed for this great catch. Thank you, Julian, for showing excellence in nursing care.
