Juliann provided extraordinary care for a patient who received the news they had mere weeks to live. This patient was young and had two children the same age as Juliann’s children. Caring for a patient with this tragic situation would be difficult for anyone, but it is even harder when it hits so close to home. Some in this situation would try to remain emotionally detached and distance themselves, but not Juliann. Juliann sat bedside supporting her patient as she FaceTimed her children with the devastating message that they would be coming to see their mom, possibly for the last time. Juliann consulted with our Child Life Specialists to ensure that this experience was comforting, therapeutic, and supportive for the children.  She took the time to learn the children’s interests and arranged for them to have their favorite ice cream - Rocky Road - and Marvel toys present. Juliann worked to have the meeting in a non-hospital room so the kids could see their mom and not be scared. As nurses, we are entrusted to care for our patients in some of their darkest and lowest moments. This was a situation, where, as a nurse, you know you cannot keep your patient from experiencing pain and you work your hardest to ease the suffering. Juliann not only eased the suffering of her patient, but also the patient’s children. Juliann went above and beyond for her patient and her patient’s family and that is why she is a true DAISY Nurse.
