...DS and family were deciding on whether or not to continue dialysis and to evaluate the continuation of hospice. DS was having difficulty with pain management and her responsiveness was deteriorating rapidly. Julie advocated multiple times for the patient's comfort which meant paging the admitting physician repeatedly. Even though she is part time, Julie maintained continuity of care for DS for two weeks. Julie maintained open communication with the family especially when the patient became unresponsive. Julie fought for the patient's comfort even when it required a substantial amount of narcotics to meet the patient's needs. Julie also provided a calm environment for the family even when her patient assignment had her caring for three to four other patients. Julie and the family had closure together when the patient passed away on Julie's shift. The family demonstrated appreciation to Julie for all of the care and compassion she gave them during this difficult time.
