Julie Hoegger is one of the amazing pediatric providers that now works with all our newborns on MCH. She is a wonderful addition to our team. She is calm, professional and extremely helpful to all the nurses. She also loves to teach and participates in our mock drills to help grow the skills of our newer nursery nurses. No matter the time of day or night, she responds to questions or concerns with patience and reassurance. Recently, we had an unexpected preterm delivery at 27 weeks. Being a community hospital without a NICU, she immediately started preparing the staff, room, and patients as soon as it was apparent that the mother could not be transferred to another facility. She huddled three separate times predelivery and established roles, responsibilities, and contingency plans. She worked on finding a NICU that would accept the baby after delivery. She explained to the parents what would happen and what potential complications they might expect. When the baby was born and required resuscitation, she led the team with skill and calmness. The code went extremely smoothly due to her leadership, and the baby did very well. He was transferred to a NICU for extended care. After the baby had left the facility, she held a debrief with the team of nurses to ensure everyone was okay, that we all felt like things went well, and to see if we or she could have done anything different. She always has a debrief after difficult cases, even when they go perfectly. It is an awesome thing to be a part of and it helps solidify the skills/perceptions of the newer staff. The family was very appreciative of the care they received. They reached out and let us know that they "were very happy with the care, especially without the NICU team being present." (They arrived about 45 minutes after the delivery.) Julie is always ensuring that the other nursing staff is comfortable and knowledgeable about the care of our tiniest patients. She is very appreciated by patients and staff.
