This patient had been here for over a month and the family was wavering about hospice, which was definitely needed. The family finally decided to make the patient hospice then didn't come to the hospital for 3 days despite numerous phone calls by staff and doctors. The husband wouldn't answer his phone or return calls.
On Saturday, Julie stopped in to see the patient whom she had cared for numerous times over the course of her stay. Julie recognized that death was imminent and she called the husband and left an urgent message for him to come to the hospital right away and bring the kids. The husband called back immediately and said he was on the way. The patient expired shortly after her family arrived. They all got to be together for this passing and the patient passed very peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
Julie displayed such compassion to this patient and her family.
