As she always does, Julie went above and beyond, coming down to the dental clinic and conducting a quick triage assessment of his injury while he was in the dental chair.
She is well-known to everyone who works in this building and is considered an honorary member of the dental team due to her unwavering commitment to our veteran patients and her colleagues at the VA. I know we love to throw around a lot of principles at VA about who we aspire to be, such as “iCare” and “HRO”, etc. Julie is an individual who embodies these ideals to the fullest, each and every day.

Over my years working in the building with Julie, she has constantly gone above and beyond for veterans and colleagues. Her customer service is outstanding. She unifies the service lines in Building 85 by taking the time to greet and get to know all the forward-facing employees and offering her assistance to them whenever requested. When our elevator is down in the building, she is generally the person on our “elevator Teams group” who is coordinating efforts to get patients upstairs to service lines, even when they aren’t her patients. She possesses a wealth of knowledge regarding resources for our geriatric veterans, both within the VA and in the community, and she will readily take time out of her own day to provide these whenever asked.

Last year, we had an unaccompanied female patient who could not transfer herself from the reception area bathroom toilet back into her wheelchair. My MSAs were alerted to the situation by another patient, and all of our providers were in patient care. They reached out to Julie, who came down, assessed the situation, recruited an additional RN from mental health, and safely completed a two-person transfer for the patient while helping keep the situation light, dignified, and stress-free for all involved.

Yesterday, I had a 100-year-old veteran in my chair who had suffered a fall at home. He was, of course, at the dentist to evaluate the collateral damage to his teeth and jaw; however, his daughter and he were more concerned about his sore knee, which had not yet been assessed and was not scheduled to be until March 31 with his primary care team. I reached out to Julie to confirm my inclination to provide them with VA-approved urgent care in their area and to see if she had any other ideas for expedited care through her GEC team at VA. As she always does, Julie went above and beyond, coming down to the dental clinic and conducting a quick triage assessment of his injury while he was in the dental chair. She confirmed that it was likely limited to soft tissue and that urgent care for pain management and external stabilization was probably the right call. The patient and his daughter were so thankful.

Julie embodies the spirit of VAPS in her dedication to all veterans, as well as her constant positivity and teamwork. She is an invaluable asset here, and we are fortunate to have her in our building. During this time of unprecedented change and uncertainty, I wanted to reach out and extend my kudos to one of our own. She inspires us all to be the best versions of ourselves!
