Our journey began here at CCMC on MS8 in 2016. Denial, Apprehension, Fear; they were just a few of the emotions we were experiencing. How could this be? Our nine-year-old son was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and we knew we had a long road ahead, with a lot of time going to be spent here on HEM/ONC unit.
We were greeted by and received wonderful treatment and care from so many nurses, doctors and PCA's, but one REALLY stood out from the beginning. Her name is Julie and she is the friendliest, most outgoing, compassionate person (and of course, nurse). I don't think I have ever seen her without a huge smile on her face. Her positive energy is infectious!
When she was first introduced to our son, he had one serious question for her. The question he had asked each nurse or staff member that came into his room... "What is your favorite baseball team? ". The simple question was his way of trying to find common ground, or a connection with each person he asked. You see, our son is one of the biggest Red Sox fans you will meet. 100% - Red Sox!!! And his player, #34 David Ortiz.
Julie's answer left a quick disappointed look on his face. Julie was a Yankees fan. As soon as she saw the look and his smirk, her sassy spunkiness kicked in and she replied " Don't worry I can tell already I like you and we have to have something else in common ". Within 30 seconds they found common ground on the other big dispute " Moe's vs Chipotle". Once he learned of her love for Moe's, well the rest is history.
Each stay we got to know Julie more and more and her joking banter helped pass time, as many stays were quite lengthy. Julie goes above and beyond to make sure the quality of care for her patients and their families is above standard. She learns about who each person is, really getting to know them. I know it's her job, being a nurse, but never once has Julie made it feel like that is why she's here. I believe that there is a reason she and our son have become close. I love seeing his face when he sees she's on shift. I love that he asks me " I wonder if Julie is working", as we are driving up for another admission. He thinks of her often, as I do, because she's more than just a nurse on MS8, she's become family here. A special connection.....unexplainable, because of the kind of person, friend, and nurse that she is.
