Julie took it upon herself to make thickened popsicles and flavored ice chips for the patient.
Julie Seelie constantly dedicates herself to the nursing profession and empathetic patient care. She recently took on a leadership position to help support nurses in collaboration of best practices but is very modest in sharing her own impact. Julie has made a significant impact on two occasions this past year on patients' outcomes. When she was preparing discharge instructions for a patient who suffered a stroke, she realized that the patient was unable to read and would not understand the importance of his medications. She took it upon herself to access visual management tools and colors to show what the medication was; for example, a blood thinner with drops of blood that became smaller that she colored red. In doing this, she not only ensured the patient's understanding of medication instructions, but she also provided empathy to his situation without judgment. It was an extra step that she completed and made the patient feel as though it was a 'normal process'.
Secondly, she cared for a patient who had a long length of stay with a very challenging diagnosis. When the patient was close to discharge, all he wanted was popsicles but due to swallowing restrictions was not able to. Julie took it upon herself to make thickened popsicles and flavored ice chips for the patient. She even took it a step further and made enough to get him through the weekend. These two examples are evidence of the type of care Julie delivers to her patients daily. She is constantly putting in extra effort to improve the patient experience and that impacts the entire unit.
