As a staff member, I wondered why 7W staff received so many awards for excellence in patient care. After being a patient on the unit for 5 days, I now know why. All the staff, housekeeping, secretaries, CNAs, RNs, physicians, case management, educators, and managers, were exceptional. Among this amazing staff, there is one RN, Julie Tran, who deserves to be recognized for her extraordinary nursing care. She is an exceptional nurse and patient advocate, she was my voice when needed. Without Julie's professional care, my recovery and discharge would have been delayed. Since I was able to walk on my own, I did not qualify for physical therapy. She took over as my "physical therapist". She walked with me numerous times to help me gain enough strength to walk up the stairs into my apartment. Julie took the time each day to sit and discuss the plan of care and how we were going to tackle the day's challenges together. She certainly helped ease my nerves by reminding me we were a team. Even my TMMC colleagues commented on the excellence of Julie's nursing care during a visit to my room. As healthcare providers, we are used to being in control. However, with an unexpected diagnosis and emergency surgery, my sense of control was diminished; and I put my faith in the hands of my care team. During the course of my stay, I was always kept up-to-date with what was happening. Bedside report was especially important to help me feel a part of the plan of care for the day. Whenever I would thank Julie, she would reply, "I am just doing my job". Julie does far more than "her job". She is an exemplary health care provider who represents all core values of the Torrance Memorial Medical Center. I cannot express how thankful I am to have had Julie as my nurse as well as all the great 7W staff.
