Junaidah Yahaya has been working as a Senior Staff Midwife in Labor and Delivery since June 2006. She has always demonstrated a holistic approach to the patients. As the excellent Midwife she is, she demonstrated a keen interest in ensuring every process is done taking into consideration all the human being components, including their spiritually.
In 2016, Junaidah realized that the disposal of the placenta was not in line with Islamic Law. She took over the challenge to completely revise all processes and structures to ensure this was happening in line with the patient's principles. It was only correct that someone with knowledge and understanding of Islamic teachings was taking ownership of this vitally important new aspect. Being a non-Arabic speaker, Junaidah had to first relay with a number of religious departments in order to precisely translate the religious law (i.e. fatwa).
Throughout all the process Junaidah showed diligence that is commendable and went above and beyond to change the practices. Today, all patients have this process done according to their religious beliefs because of Junaidah's true care and holistic practice. The new policy and procedure came into operation in March 2017. It is a real example of empathy with the patients as even when the patients are unaware of this aspect, Junaidah strived to ensure the practices were done according to their principles.
Junaidah accepted this huge challenge with good grace knowing that what she was doing was going to improve patient care by ensuring everyone would comply with Islamic teachings in the correct way. Having known Junaidah for a few years, I know how important and how proud Junaidah is of her Islamic upbringing, Islamic teaching, and Islamic religion. This is central to everything she does both for patients, her profession, but also in her own personal life. By Junaidah accepting and embracing the challenge of developing and implementing structures and processes based upon an Islamic fatwa, she has ensured that numerous patients, many of whom she will never know, and for perpetuity will benefit from her thoughtfulness and compassion. They can safe in the knowledge that Islamic Law is being fully complied with and supported by SFHP.
