My husband was admitted at Providence St. Joseph for a triple bypass surgery. On that first day, Justin popped into his room as a lunch fill-in for one of his colleagues. During that short time, his professionalism and commitment to patient care was evident. Subsequently, my husband had the great pleasure of having Justin as his day nurse on Saturday and Sunday (which ended up being his discharge day) and I was present all day both days. It’s hard to put into words the kind of incredible energy, compassion, care and knowledge, coupled with just the right amount of assertiveness when relaying important information to make and help my husband understand when it was time to pay attention that Justin provided with seeming ease. Justin thoroughly and carefully explained each step of care and why he was doing it, it was great for reassurance about my husband’s vitals, especially his oxygen level, which had been an issue for ICU release. He used both of our names consistently, asked about pets and family, and remembered even the smallest detail. All of this was so meaningful, especially at the end of a long stay. We sang his praises to all the doctors who came by, as well as other floor staff members who all agreed Justin “was the best.” Before we left, he printed out a fantastic guide for next steps and included a very easy to follow medication schedule and a lot of other information to make the transition to home recovery smooth. We left with confidence we “had this,” and hugs and some grateful tears were shared as we departed the floor. Providence Burbank is extremely lucky to have Justin on staff - he exemplifies the highest level of patient care and protocol adherence. It is our privilege to nominate him for a DAISY Award, and truly hope he is recognized for his outstanding work.
