I found Justine sitting at his bedside holding his hand as he continued his journey beyond, she was not instructed or asked to do this.
Justine Rawson is a glowing example of what it is to provide radical loving care and to have a sacred encounter with our patients. Justine joined TICU as a TIPS nurse from the ED earlier this year, she has grown into the critical care role and is a model nurse for all. Today, I witnessed her at the bedside of a patient in Trauma Intensive Care. Mr. A. is a 99-year-old gentleman who tripped and fell at his home suffering a cervical spine fracture, today his family made the difficult decision to make him comfortable and to withdrawal care. He was extubated, however, the family chose not to stay with him as he passed away. As I was rounding in the unit, I found Justine sitting at his bedside holding his hand as he continued his journey beyond, she was not instructed or asked to do this. Justine's intuition as a caring nurse, drove here to his beside to sit with him. This was an extraordinary and very touching moment that I will never forget.
