Kaci cared for a young male patient whom others held prejudice against due to his BMI. Kaci approached this patient with an open approach and recognized that the patient showed signs of depression, and she slowly built a rapport with the patient. She was able to slowly build a relationship with the patient and identify that he had problems in his life that he coped with through a binge eating disorder. Kaci had a heart-to-heart with this patient and ensured the patient was cognizant of his current long-term prognosis if he did not make changes in his life. He showed acceptance of this revelation, and Kaci helped the patient identify reasons in his life for him to fight for his health. Whether the patient was able to make these changes is yet to be seen, but Kaci ensured that through interdisciplinary teamwork, the patient got the referrals he needed to have the resources to make the changes to his lifestyle. Kaci showed this patient that there are people out there who care, even when they themselves may not feel worthy in that moment. Kaci embodies the nursing values laid out by ANA, through health promotion, human dignity, caring, and coordination of care. Kaci deserves all the praise for her tireless work to ensure all patients are cared for in the most holistic way possible.
