Kadedra spent much time patiently listening as the patient described feeling overwhelmed and anxious as she conveyed her concerns, fears, and frustrations. Kadedra took the time to meticulously bathe and apply lotion to her skin, followed by an unexpected and very much appreciated back massage.
I had the pleasure of working alongside Kadedra Storey, during her Health & Illness 1 clinical in the Fall of 2022. I fondly remember Kadedra approaching her clinical days with such enthusiasm and eagerness to take advantage of any opportunity offered to her. Not only did she display such kindness and respect toward her classmates and instructor, but she truly shined while at the bedside, where she effortlessly and eagerly engaged in therapeutic interactions with her patients (families) and staff alike. It was entirely obvious that Kadedra was exactly where she was meant to be, working amongst those who were suffering from illness, injury, declining health, and persistent stress and fear as many faced an uncertain future.

Kadedra excelled in the clinical environment. She spent much of her time at the bedside going above and beyond to ensure that her patient’s needs were fully met. She individualized the care she delivered, paying special attention to priority concerns, and safety, while making certain that her patients were clean, comfortable, felt confident and valued.

I can recall two of Kadedra’s clinical experiences, both of which were deeply touching to not only her patients but also to myself. In one of her clinical reflections Kadedra stated “during clinicals today I was able to brighten my patient’s day by buying her a card for her husband's birthday and assisting her with signing it.” This patient had expressed sadness in being hospitalized and away from her husband, on his birthday. During Kadedra’s short break this thoughtful and generous student visited the hospitals gift shop where she selected a birthday card for her patient to have for her husband when he visited. This touching gesture brought her patient to tears along with a warm smile that filled her previously saddened expression. This kind, frail patient told me that this was one of the most meaningful gestures ever done for her. She was beyond grateful, to say the least.

On another day Kadedra cared for a patient who was in very poor health, entirely dependent on others for her needs and care and openly expressed her very gloomy outlook. Kadedra spent much time patiently listening as the patient described feeling overwhelmed and anxious as she conveyed her concerns, fears, and frustrations. Kadedra took the time to meticulously bathe and apply lotion to her skin, followed by an unexpected and very much appreciated back massage. This patient choked back tears as she discussed what this young student had done for her. She mentioned being hospitalized many times prior, yet, never having care quite like this. She said I have been lying in this bed for days; my back has been so sore, and now it feels so good. She thanked Kadedra for being there, for listening, and for acknowledging and showing such kindness and respect to her.

Aside from my clinical time with Kadedra, I have been amazed at the number of people (most are unknown to me) that see my Highland uniform and tell me they know Kadedra is one of ours. Their remarks are filled with an abundance of compliments!  She has truly made a name for herself through her hard work, determination, devotion and optimistic presence.

It has been inspiring to witness Kadedra grow and flourish as a student. I have no doubt that she will continue to touch and influence others in and around the amazing field of nursing in the years to come. Thank you for choosing Highland’s Nursing Program for your educational journey! It has been an honor to have you!
