I had a birth plan for a natural home birth. Unexpectedly, my water broke at 35 weeks leading me to have my baby at the hospital. After a long and traumatic 28-hour labor, my son was sent to the Special Care Unit. Kaila Hooper was the nurse that spent the most time with my son because she had always assigned him when she was on shift. Not only was she intentional with my son but with me and my family. We never imagined that we would end up in the SCU and it was a very difficult 2 weeks for first time parents. There were so many little wins but so many setbacks and Kaila was always right there to encourage me when I was struggling. Not only did Kaila offer so much encouragement and kindness but she even came back after her day off with ideas of how to get my son to progress so we could go home. She never gave up on getting us home even when it felt impossible to even think that far in advance. We had a slew of phenomenal nurses but without Kaila our experience would not have been half as amazing as it was.
