Nursing doesn’t stop when the shift ends—and Kailey Bird exemplifies that truth in every way. While spending time with her children at a local park, Kailey witnessed a child suffer a head laceration after a fall. Without hesitation, she ran to the scene and calmly introduced herself to the child’s mother, explaining that she is a Pediatric Emergency Department nurse and offering her help.

The mother gratefully accepted. Kailey, along with another bystander, helped clean the child’s blood-soaked face, applied a dressing, and guided the family to our Pediatric Emergency Department for further care. Kailey took it upon herself to notify the charge RN in advance, ensuring a smooth transition when the patient arrived.

The child’s mother was overwhelmed with gratitude, calling Kailey a hero and repeatedly expressing thanks for her compassion and quick action. Thanks to Kailey’s calm demeanor and clinical expertise, the child received timely care to repair the laceration and was safely discharged.

As her leader, I couldn’t be prouder. Kailey’s actions reflect the heart of nursing—compassion, courage, and commitment—even when off duty. For her extraordinary service and selflessness, Kailey truly deserves the DAISY Award.
