Even with the gruesome scene she walked in on, she remained calm and focused, allowing her training to take over. She remained by the patient's side until it was determined that the patient was safe.
This RN exemplified the service and dedication of a nurse who deserves this recognition. She was assigned the arduous task of dealing with an overly complicated and disrespectful patient. She continued to alleviate the issues that the patient was presenting with, while the patient continued to be rude and demanding to her and her fellow staff. With unwavering determination, she continued her best attempts to meet the needs of her patient. On this night, early in the shift, she responded to a life-threatening emergency in this patient's room. The PCT had approached the patient to gather routine vital signs when she noticed that the patient was slumped over. The PCT immediately notified other staff of the emergency, and interventions were immediately activated to keep this patient as safe as possible. She entered the patient's room, which at this time appeared violent and unsettling. Despite the condition in which she observed, she entered with confidence and poise, not a bit deterred from the dreadful and dangerous scene that was rapidly unfolding. She maintained her calm and began jumping into action, initiating the interventions and saving the patient’s life. She remained with the patient, reassuring him that the staff was doing everything in their power. It took what seemed like a lifetime. She worked closely to establish a resolution with the Rapid Response Team. She physically and emotionally supported the patient’s needs, cleaned the patient and all the surroundings, and ordered interventions and labs to ensure the patient was as safe as possible despite this emergency. Despite her quick response with interventions that undoubtedly saved this patient's life, the patient still managed to be rude to her and other staff. The patient continued to argue and render threats. Regardless of the difficulty with this patient, from both a physical emergency standpoint and a difficult disposition, her professionalism never wavered for a second. Even with the gruesome scene she walked in on, she remained calm and focused, allowing her training to take over. She remained by the patient's side until it was determined that the patient was safe. She showed the patient an amazing level of compassion that they were unwilling to reciprocate. She exemplifies the level of dedication that is required to be an excellent nurse. It is for this reason that I would like to nominate her for a DAISY Award.
