I believe that Kailey was able to build an extraordinary, trusting relationship that helped the patient reveal some very concerning details about her personal safety within her home.
Kailey and I were mutually working with a patient who not only had medical issues but social issues surrounding her living situation and personal safety. As a social work care manager, I rely on the nurses, who are truly the front-line staff of our patients, to let care management know any additional concerns that arise during their interactions with patients that could hinder a patient’s discharge. With that said, I believe that Kailey was able to build an extraordinary, trusting relationship that helped the patient reveal some very concerning details about her personal safety within her home that were not expressed during care management’s interactions with the patient. Due to Kailey’s special connection and ability to create this trusting relationship and bond between them, the patient agreed to share this information with care management, and together we were able to come up with a discharge plan that is working to move her near her children and out of this abusive environment without the knowledge of her abuser.

It is amazing to me how much nurses like Kailey can affect positive change in our patients’ lives not only through the lens of medicine but the eyes of a compassionate individual who takes the time to really listen to her patients in all aspects of their lives and their recovery. I am honored and humbled to work with such a nurse like Kailey Stevens!

I was working with Kailey on North during this patient situation. Kailey had been caring for this patient for a few days it was clear the rapport they had between the two of them was strong and came easy. I remember Kailey saying how she could just sit in her room all day just sharing stories and joking around. Kailey had just gone into this patient’s room to do some routine Heart failure education with her when the patient had gone one to disclose something she had never told anyone else; that she was in a very unsafe situation at home and living in constant fear of her abuser. This came as a total surprise. The next steps to knowing this information were not totally clear, yet Kailey handled it with grace. She notified her CNCs and took prompt action to notify the MD and the care manager. I remember Kailey talking to me a few days after saying how helpless she felt in these moments and that she wished there was more that she could do. Come to find out, the patient was able to move safely away from her abuser and closer to her family. Kailey was the first and only person this patient trusted enough to disclose this information to. She always has open ears and an open heart for her patients. This is just one example of many where Kailey went above and beyond in her care.
